Fletcher Farm 2019 Artist-in-Residence Program Gets Off to a Great Start
July 24, 2019, Ludlow, VT—As the month of July ends, Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts (www.fletcherfarm.org) bids goodbye to Artist-in-Residence Nancy Monson, who both created her own works and taught while at the school.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to have spent a month at Fletcher Farm,” says Monson. “I loved being in the Jewelry Room as my studio, and visiting with teachers and students, seeing the wide array of art forms being taught from ceramics to watercolor painting to weaving, woodworking and quilting, hosting an open studio during the annual craft fair sale and teaching a few classes myself.” She adds, “it was such a wonderful luxury to have a large, sunny space to create in and to be part of the artistic community at Fletcher Farm.”
Monson is a fiber and multimedia artist from Connecticut (https://instagram.com/nancymonson). She is a past student at Fletcher Farm School and the recipient of a post-graduate certificate in Fiber Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her work has been featured in many exhibitions, including one this past year at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. She is also a widely published writer on the topics of wellness and creativity, and the author of Craft to Heal: Soothing Your Soul with Sewing, Painting, and Other Pastimes, which explores the mental, physical and spiritual benefits of pursuing a creative activity you love.
In addition to working on silk paintings and quilts, Monson taught three Zentangle drawing classes during her stay, which were so enthusiastically received that she is returning on Saturday, October 5th to teach a full-day class comprised of Zentangle drawing on paper and on silk with vibrantly colored paints.
“We are very interested in having the Artist-in-Residence be part of the fabric of the school, and interacting with students, teachers and staff as Nancy did,” says Publicity Director Debi Orton. “Having Nancy on campus heightened interest from other artists about the residency, which we are looking to make an annual summer opportunity—and, in fact, we are already receiving inquiries from artists about it.” Orton adds that special consideration will be given to artists who are willing to teach classes to children. “Part of our mission at Fletcher Farm is to introduce children to a variety of art forms and the help them recognize the value of creativity,” she says, “especially since many schools no longer have the resources to teach art.”
